We all know wedding planning is a tremendous task. It is most difficult not to lose focus on the meaning of marriage to the many questions at hand: who to invite? this or that site? what dress for the bride? what suit for the man? what words will we say? DJ or band? And what about the food and the flowers? The stress of the tedious tests can rip us away from the most important intent we ought to engage: "just what is our marriage meant to Create?"
"By the powers vested in me, I now pronounce you husband and wife." That very moment is the birth of a new life. Of course, all things have changed now that you wear rings, but these are not the new lives to which my song sings. I mean to say that your marriage moment carries it's own natal chart, which signifies the birth of a new being. You were born singing the song of your astrological chart, and he singing his, but the chart you will always share reflects the planetary alignments at the time of that first wedded kiss.
When we use the astrological arts to compare partners' charts we can quickly see how souls have come together in relationship to assist one another in strengthening gifts and overcoming obstacles. Her Gemini Moon aligned to his Gemini Saturn, for example, reflects that her natural engagement with the truths of eternal youth will assist him in moving through the patterns stitched by parents and other authority figures who forced him to grow up too quickly.
However, no two charts will fully complete one another. This is where the wedding chart comes in. This third chart, that of your sacred marriage, can fill holes that your partnership alone does not. Slide 1 shows the birth chart of my most demanding client... me. I know these charts can be quite confusing with all of their foreign symbols and strange spaghetti-like lines, so Slide 2 strips my chart way down to focus on one of my most important astrological aspects. The purple line in this slide shows the Trine (120 degree alignment) between my Cancer Mars and Scorpio Sun. One of the crown jewels of my astrological practice is called "filling the holes." Slide 3 shows such a hole at zero-to-two degrees Pisces that, if filled, would complete a Grand Water Trine, the most harmonious alignment of emotional enlightenment.

One way I could fill that astrological hole is by finding a partner who has a Planet or Point at zero-to-two degrees Pisces on her birth chart. But what if my true love does not fill that hole? Then, it could be of my highest emotional interest to choose a wedding chart that does. She and I could, for example, choose to marry at at moment when the Moon brings Her Waters to that zone of the Zodiac, which happens once every month. I like to joke with my friends that they better prepare themselves for my wedding in the middle-of-nowhere Kansas on a Tuesday morning at 4:27am. Now, that's not going to happen, but it does bring up an important truth: when working with the rapidly-moving Moon, the location of the wedding matters as much as the time.
Slide 4 shows a date and time here in Seattle when the Moon will spin right through that hole of mine... Sunday, September 7th, 2014 at 6:21pm. What a nice day for a white wedding! If my partner and I had plans for a more tropical first dance, we might choose 3:21pm on the same day in Kona, Hawaii. Yes please! Looks like I've only got three days to find a woman to marry. Well, that's probably not going to happen, but the Moon brings Her magic to the Zone of the Zodiac where I have a Pisces hole on my chart every month. Perhaps I'll be ready by October 5th, but that would be 4:00am in Seattle. How about 1:01pm in Barcelona? Sign me up! Now, just where is she?
And that last question brings our attention to the most magical mysteries of this method. How can we select a date with Planetary alignments that fill holes on both partners' birth charts? Well, it can surely be done, it's fabulous fun, and finding that piece of our relationship's puzzle leads us back to the most beautiful question of sacred marriage. Who will we invite? What will we wear? What flowers will adorn the tables? DJ or band? These are wonderful questions that help us honor our similarities and differences, but the most important question our wedding planning should ask is, "just what do we intend for our marriage to Create in this world?"
It is has been my great privilege to lead couples through a ceremonial connection to the soul purpose of their wedding ceremony by asking them to ask themselves this very question. The astrological arts provide a celestial mirror that reflects our wisdom in choosing one another. And the same arts can be used to choose a date, time, and place for a marriage that serves what we are here to create together. Marriage is much more than a contract and celebration. It is a magical merging of Yin and Yang, which by no means is said to suggest the same wisdom does not apply to your potential choice in a partner of the same sex.
Finally, if the vows have already been exchanged, reflecting upon the chart you subconsciously chose for your marriage also provides heavenly insight into just what you are here to do in this world together. Honoring such soul intentions consciously is a brilliant gift that will assist you through the rising of the waves in those times of occasional relationship storms.
